Sustainable Decatur Public Meeting

Dear Working Group Members,

Thank you for your input towards the “ SustainABLE Decatur” project so far.  Since our last meeting, the consultants were hard at work putting together a draft plan.

Please mark your calendars for an upcoming public meeting on:

August 19th from
5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at
Madden Auditorium (Decatur Public Library). 

At this meeting you will get a chance to review and comment on the “SustainABLE Decatur” draft plan.  

AF&PA RECYCLING AWARDS

Committed to recycling? Tell us about it.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) Recycling Awards recognize outstanding paper recycling efforts. In 2010 AF&PA will award a business, community, and school with a $2,000 cash prize, framed original artwork, and local and national recognition. Winners, who will be announced in March, will also be featured on the paperrecycles.org Web site.

Establishing Prairie Grasses

AWI is hosting a public meeting on establishing prairie grasses to be held in the USDA Service Center conference room (on the Richland campus) at 6:30 p.m. this Wednesday, September 16. Click here for more details.

This meeting is intended for farmers and landowners interested in growing perennial energy grasses. It is also for anyone interested in the water quality, habitat, and other environmental benefits of native prairie grasses.

Organized by the Agricultural Watershed Institute and is sponsored by AWI, the University of Illinois' Center for Advanced BioEnergy Research (CABER), Blade Energy Crops, and the Energy biosciences Institute. 

Come explore the opportunities for farmers and landowners to grow perennial grass crops for renewable energy and to enhance water quality and ecosystem health.  This biomass can be used today for heat and power and will be used for advanced biofuels in the future.  Learn about the different kinds of perennial grasses, their growing characteristics and potential uses.
